Role of Sericin during the Spinning Process of Silk Fiber - 2. Gelation Behavior of SF in the presence of SS |

Silkworm silk contains two structural proteins, fibroin(SF) and sericin(SS). SF is synthesiszed in the posterior gland and immigrated into the middle gland. SS is synthesized in the middle gland and stored with fibroin until spinning. The secret of spinning mechanism of silk fiber lies on the stability of SF in the middle gland. The unsolved problem is how silkworm prevents the precipitation of highly concentrated and hydrophobic SF in the middle gland until spinning. Since SS is stored in the middle gland with SF for few days, there might be some role of SS during these periods. We have extracted SF and SS separately and mixed both in various ratios. The gelation time of SF was observed in the presence of SS. |
