Inorganic fillers play an important role in fabricating composite-typed proton exchange membranes for DMFCs owing to high correlation with overall membrane performances. SiO2 nanoparticles with different surface properties were homogeneously distributed within the polymer matrix with a help from a dispersant, Pluronic® L64. In particular, SiO2 particles with high surface area and small average diameter contributed to an enhancement of proton conductivity, membrane stability, and electrochemical single cell performances and, simultaneously, prevention of methanol permeation as barriers. The desirable SiO2 content was 2 wt.%, considering the single cell results and membrane stability. |
