Nanostructured Materials from Block Copolymers Analyzed by Neutron Scattering and Molecular Theory |

Phase-segregating block copolymers from two or more homopolymers have been known to exhibit self-assembly behavior to form nanoscale ordered structures. Among them, the homologous series of polystyrene-b-poly(n-alkyl methacrylates) with varying size of normal-alkyl groups reveal all possible features of phase behavior ever found in block copolymers, which include ordering upon cooling and reversely upon heating, barotropicity and baroplasticity. The formed nanostructures and scattering behavior in some of those copolymer melts and films are probed through neutron small-angle scattering and reflectometry. Effective Flory interaction parameters and decay lengths are elicited from the radiation experiments. A recently developed random-phase approximation (RPA) theory in connection with a molecular model for perturbed hard-sphere chains is used to analyze the experiments and predict the phase and self-assembly behavior for the copolymer systems. |
