Biodiesel is a renewable, biodegradable, and nontoxic fuel that can be used in diesel cars without requiring modification of existing engines. Biodiesel, a fatty acid methyl ester, is commercially produced through transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats with alkali catalysts, as these promote a high conversion rate. In this study, biodiesel was produced from waste sewage sludge containing approximately 11 % of lipid. Biodiesel conversion was less than 27 % in the conventional one-step process though as high as 92 % of lipid extraction efficiency was achieved. We developed a modified two-step process, where different type of catalyst was used in each step, and biodiesel conversion was increased to 51 %. We additionally investigated the possibility of using solid catalyst, zeolite-NaOH, instead of liquid catalyst, and achieved about 55 % of biodiesel conversion. |
