Highly sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) was synthesized according to post-sulfonation method which utilizes trimethylsilyl chlorosulfonate (TMSCS) as a sulfonating agent. PPO is an engineering polymer with high thermal stability and excellent mechanical properties. Obtained highly sulfonated PPO is soluble in water, so it was crosslinked with an azide containing copolymer in order to obtain a successful fuel cell membrane. The film was prepared by solution casting at 80℃, and an effective crosslinking method was investigated either by applying different crosslinking temperature or by using UV curing method. Reactions were monitored by proton NMR, FT-IR, and DSC. The membrane properties were studied by ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, and proton conductivity. |
