Synthesis of Biocompatible polymer/MWCNT composites by in-situ dispersion polymerization |

A Facile method to prepare well dispersed multi wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/biocompatible polymer composites by in-situ free radical dispersion polymerization in ethanol is presented in the study. The MWCNTs were first surface modified with silylating agent 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(MPTMS) in order to disperse well. It also provides methacrylate end group for polymer grafting. The in-situ polymerization enhances dispersion of MWCNTs in the polymer matrix. Composites of well dispersed MWCNT in the polymer matrix are expected to have improved thermal, electric and mechanical properties. TEM and FESEM reveal that a much enhanced dispersion of nanotube bundles in the polymer matrix and excellent surface coverage of polymer on the MWCNTs were observed. FTIR analysis clearly shows the surface grafting of nanotubes and the tethered polymer. |
