Polypropylene(PP) nanocomposites were found to exhibit higher stiffness, improved mechanical and gas barrier properties and flame retardancy. In this study, PP nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing with a twin screw extruder for the enhancement of the flame retardancy with various compositions of compatibilizer, montmorillonite(MMT) and flame retardants. Morphology of nanocomposites was characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) measurement. The exfoliated morphology of PP nanocomposites was investigated from the results of XRD and TEM measurement. The enhanced mechanical properties of PP nanocomposites was obtained with MMT contents increased. Excellent flame retardancy of PP nanocomposites, UL94 V-0 rating, was obtained with some composition ratios of flame retardant. We found that the dispersity of MMT affects the synergistic effect of flame retardancy.
