Robust Superhydrophobic Polysilazane Nanofibrous Mats for High Performance Automobile Air Filter |

We demonstrate the fabrication of thermally-stable and solvent-resistant automobile air filters with high particle collection efficiency by electrospinning of phenylsilsesquiazine (PhSSQZ). Freestanding PhSSQZ air filters exhibit extreme water repellency above 150°, induced by the combination of the hierarchical structure of nanofibers and the hydrophobicity of phenyl groups in PhSSQZ. Any thermal damage of the nanofibrous structures and wettability changes were not observed even after heat treatment at a harsh condition of 600 °C, due to the formation of the structured siloxane network. Moreover, the siloxane network of PhSSQZ offers excellent solvent-resistance toward various organic solvents and corrosive acid/base. |
