Nuclear waste could contain various toxic and hazardous materials such as heavy metals, organic materials. Many of nuclear wastes have to be treated in order to reduce the radioisotopes concentration to levels acceptable for discharge to the environment. Ion exchange is widely used for metal ion separation, as well as for the removal of hazardous materials from aqueous waste. Alginic acid are known to have an affinity towards cation(Ca2+, Ba2+) and possess the desired functionality like carboxyl group for insertion of appropriate receptor. Alginate beads were used to measure adsorption behaviors of Co2+, Cs+ and Sr2+. Furthermore, we synthesized capturing probe embedded in beads by a reaction between alginate and azo dye. When bead adsorbed metal ion, color of dye-functionalized alginate beads was changed through an interaction between the dye and metal ion. We estimated the very small color change of the alginate probe using RGB color coordinates. |
