The operation of nuclear power plants, reprocessing plants, research facilities and the use of radioisotopes in industry and diagnostic material produce a wide variety of radioactive wastes. Ion-exchange adsorbers are widely used for radioisotope separation, as well as for the removal of hazardous products from aqueous waste prior to discharge to the environment. Unmodified alginates are known to have an affinity towards cations (Ca2+, Ba2+) and possess the desired functionality like carboxylic acid for insertion of appropriate receptor fragments on the polymeric backbone. Alginate beads are used to measure adsorption behaviors of Co2+, Cs+ and Sr2+. Kinetics of ion exchange and adsorption capacity of such alginate beads are influenced by concentration of Co2+, Cs+ and Sr2+ ions. Furthermore, we prepared capturing probe (Azo-based dye) embedded in alginate beads by reaction between alginate and the organic dye. |
