In the combined system, some algae and bacteria may promote mutual growth and thus lead to a higher removal efficiency of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphate) than that in single algae or bacteria system. The co-immobilized culture of Chlorella vulgaris (green microalgae) and Pseudomonas putida (aerobic bacterium) in small alginate beads was used to remove nitrogen and phosphate from synthetic wastewater. The uptake of nutrients from wastewater by microorganisms was compared in suspended, immobilized, and co-immobilized batch cultures in flasks. Controls were prepared without adding microorganisms in the wastewater. |
