Pyroligneous liquid, obtained from traditional process of charcoal fabrication, has been traditionally used in various fields such as an insect repellent, deodorizer, antibacterial agent, sterilizer, alkaline bath and wash, and food additive. This paper will focus on uses of food additive and deodorizer. From the component analysis of the liquid, methanol must be reduced to use it food additive. To decrease methanol, the liquid should be distilled twice. The first distillation goes under the conditions of 260mmHg and 50℃ until all the liquid is vaporized. Water, same volume as the liquid, is added to the distilled liquid after the first distillation. The second distillation goes under the conditions of 600mmHg and 65℃ until the same amount of liquid as added water is removed. On the other hand, pyroligneous liquid can remove stench by some mechanism. However, it has its own smoky smell, so it is hard to use it deodorant without any process. Diluting it by water, masking it by other scents and contacting with active carbon are suggested to reduce its peculiar smoky smell. |
