One of the photo-responsive materials, azobenzene, shows cis-trans isomerization upon exposure to the ultraviolet light. This remote actuation mechanism is very useful and its further by elaborate molecular design has made possible for the photo-responsive materials to be applied such as MRI environment, the robot-arms, artificial muscles, precision machines, etc. In this study, liquid crystalline monomers consist of rigid moiety azobenzene and flexible backbone acrylate are synthesized and cross-linked using acrylate chemistry. Upon UV irradiation, the elastomer transformed into a bent shape on a flat surface and. recovered its original shape under ambient light. Directional deformation of liquid crystalline elastomer is further studied and will be discussed. |
