Organic Acid Recovery in Fermentation Broth for Biofuel Production via Hybrid Membrane Separation Processes |

Organic acids are produced as the intermediate products in fermentation processes, and they can be converted into biofuel such as biobutanol in a catalytic process. The concentration of butyric acid in fermentation broth needs to be kept constant via selective removal of butyric acid using continuous separation processes. In this study, nanofiltration process was applied to recover aqueous organic acid solutions from the fermentation broth and forward osmosis process was selected as the concentration step. The separation performance and fouling behavior were evaluated for selective organic acid recovery. |
