Superstructure network is a systemic approach in which multiple design problems for a chemical system is solved simultaneously by mathematical programming. Specifically, in carbon capture and utilization (CCU), multiple processing routes or pathways can be identified and evaluated from a CCU superstructure with multiple flue gases, carbon capture processes, carbon utilization technologies, and products. As many of CCU pathway are not sustainable in terms of profitability and carbon reduction, the role of superstructure representation plays an essential role in CCU in that which CCU process shall be commercialized. Herein, we propose a noble framework that construct a CCU superstructure as state-equipment network (SEN) representation. The functionalities of the proposed framework are as follows: (i) ability to reduce any type of a chemical process with multiple reactions, separations, and recycles in SEN representation, (ii) construction of an optimization problems for a CCU pathway as nonlinear programming (NLP), and (iii) identification of sustainable CCU pathways as integer programming (IP). A case study with CCU superstructure is performed to demonstrate the framework. |
