Even a small of polymer binder plays an important role in the electrochemical performance of the battery and facilitates the electrochemical reaction by attaching the catalyst to the electrode. There are few studies on binders suitable for seawater batteries. Herein, the three different polymer binders are used to fabricate cathode hard carbon based electrode; (i) sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene based fluoropolymer-copolymer (Nafion), (ii) Styrene rubber and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SBR/CMC), and (iii) Poly(acrylic) acid (PAA). The hydrophilicity of each polymer binder was measured by a goniometer. The galvanostatic electrochemical performances of polymer binders show that the hydrophobic Nafion has a wider charge-discharge voltage gap than pristine hard carbon. The PAA has better electrochemical stability, the highest energy efficiency. The hydrophilic PAA binder was more suitable for hard carbon cathode in seawater batteries. |
