The preparation of biodegradable polyurethanes (PU) has drawn large attention from past few decades due to their potential applications in coatings, elastomers, adhesives and many more. However, the weak mechanical strength of PU has limited their applications. Therefore, polyurethane having good strength and flexibility is necessary and for this purpose, polylactic acid having excellent strength and flexibility were prepared. An effective way to endow polylactic acid with toughness is chain-extension reaction of the polylactic acid pre-polymer in the presence of chain extender, where, polycaprolactone is used to improve on the mechanical properties. The synthesized biodegradable polyurethane is then characterized by 1H NMR,ATR, GPC, DSC, tensile measurements and DMA. The mechanical properties of the prepared polyurethane showed tremendous increase in elongation at break. Finally, the successfully prepared polyurethane is used for the preparation of electrospun nanofibers. |
