Synthesis and evaluation of novel chondroitin sulfate-based hydrogel |

The chondroitin sulfate is a biological polymer that is abundant in the extra-cellular matrix(ECM) of connective tissues such as cartilage and tendons. It is long unbranched polysaccharide consisting of alternating disaccharide repeating units of D-glucuronic acid and D-N-acetylgalactosamine. The modification of chondroitin sulfate was performed by EDC-mediated coupling reaction. The chondroitin sulfate hydrogel was processed through a Michael type addition reaction between the grafted acrylates and poly(ethyle oxide)-thiol end groups. We evaluated its gelation time, swelling ratio, release behavior of model drugs and biological properties of a chondroitin sulfate hydrogel. |
