제목 CCS R&D in Japan and Global CCS Institute Activities
초록 The research and development of CCS in Japan is lead by the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE). Their activity is subsidised by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japanese Government.

In 2000, RITE began the development of a CO2 geological storage demonstration research project in Nagaoka, (North of Tokyo). From 2003 to 2005, nearly 10,000 tons of CO2 was injected into a 1,100m deep saline aquifer. Various kinds of monitoring technologies were applied and a long term CO2 underground behavior prediction model was developed. Consequently the identification of safe storage of CO2 was verified and monitored in detail in this region for the very first time.

RITE is also developing future technology for a coal gasification plant, which includes the development of membrane separation technology.

In addition to RITE projects, capture technology for post-combustion system demonstration test of a chemical absorption method for a coal fired power plant was carried out at Matsushima Power Plant of J-Power. Another bench-scale test has also been undertaken at the Kimitsu Ironworks of Nippon Steel Corp.

There are three major activities currently underway in Japan that support commercial deployment of CCS. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are constructing a new IGCC system, which will be demonstrated through a 250MW power plant at Nakoso Power Station, Iwaki City. J-Power are also developing a IGCC with CCS System in a pilot plan at Wakamatsu, Kitakyusyu. With the backing of 36 private companies facilitated through Japan CCS Co. Ltd, METI is advancing a 100,000t/y or more large scale demonstration storage project.

There are 19 organisations from Japan, including METI and RITE, plus several major industries that are Members of the Global CCS Institute. The Global CCS Institute was established to facilitate the development and deployment of commercial-scale CCS projects.

The Institute recently launched the Project Funding and Support Program, to support its objective to accelerate the global deployment of CCS. This program will make available approximately A$50 million per annum (approximately 52,000,000 KRW) to support a substantial portfolio of CCS projects around the world. Support will focus on projects offering the greatest return towards delivering the objective of accelerating the construction and operation of CCS projects. The program will also seek to facilitate related knowledge sharing in an effort to remove barriers facing the broader industry.

The Annual General Meeting of Members of the Global CCS Institute will be held in Kyoto, Japan in mid-October 2010.
