Synthesis of Surface-coatable PEI-passivated NIR-responsive Fluorescent Nanoparticles for Detection and Killing of Bacteria |

We herein synthesized a polydopamine-based fluorescent carbon nanoparticle passivated with polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a bacterial detection probe. The FDA:PEI possessed a cationic side for bacterial detection along with coatable and photothermal property for killing activity. FDA:PEI showed its ability to detect bacteria in both aqueous and solid phase based on fluorescence behavior. The interaction between FDA:PEI and bacterial surfaces, both in solution and on the surface of coated polypropylene films was demonstrated by Scanning electron microscopy images. Additionally, this material also showed high antibacterial potential when exposure under near infrared irradiation to induce photothermal heat for killing through thermolysis. Taking advantages of the cationic and catechol moieties on the surface of pDA carbon dots, we have developed a potential bacterial sensing system for detection and killing over a broad range of conditions. |
