Versatile Surface-coatable IR825-conjugated Fluorescent Polymer as a Dual-functional Biosensor for Synergistic Detection and Eradication of Bacteria |

We designed a versatile dual-functional biosensor for sensing and killing bacteria by combining cationic fluorescent polymer with NIR-responsive IR825 and adhesive catechol moieties. PVP polymer was quaternized with catechol and bromoethane to obtain adhesive cationic polymer, followed by conjugating fluorescent dye BODIPY and IR825 (F/PVP-IR825). The fluorescence of F/PVP-IR825 was quenched when interacted with bacteria due to ionic interaction between positive charge of F/PVP-IR825 and negative-charged bacteria cell wall. Moreover, this material can be applied in both solid- and liquid-phase assay due to the presence of catechol in F/PVP-IR825. This material also can directly kill bacteria under NIR irradiation because of generation of photothermal heat from IR825. Thus, this approach provides a promising strategy on synergistic bacteria detection and killing which is simple, rapid, and versatile.
