Alginate hydrogels have been widely used for tissue regenerative medicine and drug delivery applications due to their biocompatibility and easy fabrication through ionotropic crosslinking reaction. It is demonstrated that hyperbaric oxygen enhances wound healing process including tissue growth and angiogenesis. Herein, we report an oxygen-generating alginate (OGA) hydrogel via calcium peroxide-mediated ionotropic interaction. We characterized their physico-chemical and biological properties including rheological properties (2-3900 Pa), oxygen releasing behavior (39.8-81.0% pO2) and cytocompatibility (105.4-110.2% compared to control). In addition, we investigated effect of OGA hydrogels on wound healing process in vivo, resulting in facilitated wound closing with enhanced tissue infiltration and neovascularization. In sum, our OGA hydrogels have a significant potential as an oxygen-generating material for treatment of wound and vascular disorders in tissue regenerative medicine. |
