Calcium phosphate is an ionic compound and major inorganic phase of natural bone. Therefore, numerous investigations have been performed for the analysis on the biocompatibility of newly introduced materials via examinations on the interactions with proteins and cells. However, the biological responses to a material are often different dependent on the type of cells, i.e. normal cells, cell-line, stem cell, etc. In this study, we evaluated the biocompatibility of calcium phosphate developed in our lab using various types of cell. The protein interactions with the calcium phosphate was also analyzed. Cytocompatibility of different cell types was evaluated in terms of cell growth and alkaline phosphatase activity. Our results demonstrated that the cellular response to the calcium phosphate was considerably different elucidating that the importance of the selection of cell type for appropriate analysis on biocompatibility of a specific material. |
