Synthesis and Characterization of Dye-substituted Small Molecules for Organic Photovoltaic Cells |

Solar energy is one of the most important alternative energy and many studies have been conducted on organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs).The world record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.0% was announced by Heliatek and PCE of 10.6% using a polymeric donor was reported in the literature. Although high PCEs were achieved, polymeric materials have some drawback such as difficult purificationprocedures and broad molecularweight. Meanwhile, small molecule materials have been used in OPV devices with some advantages such as easy synthesis and purification. Recently, various dye units have been introduced into the small molecules as electron-withdrawing groups and PCEs over 8% were obtained.We synthesizedA-D-A-D-A-typesmall-molecule donorswith dye end groups as electron-accepting units. They showed narrow band gap of around 1.49eV and red-shifted absorption in the UV spectra with maxima at 765nm. Their electrochemicaland photovoltaic properties will be investigated |
