A ratiometric fluorescent probe was synthesized based on the peptide receptor bearing a pyrene fluorophore for As(III). The peptidyl probe showed ratiometric responses to several heavy metal ions including As(III) in aqueous solution, whereas the probe showed a selective ratiometric to As(III) among tested metal ions in the presence of metal chelating agent, pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDCA). The probe showed a sensitive ratiometric response to As(III) in the presence of PDCA. The detection limit for As(III) in ground water was measured to be 2.08 ppb in the presence of PDCA, which is lower than the maximum allowable level of As(III) (10 ppb) in drinking water by EPA. The binding mode study of the peptidyl probe for As(III) was carried out using IR measurements, DLS measurements and pH titration. |
