Various mesogenic compounds containing imidazole moiety were synthesized. Also, compounds with polymerizable group including vinyl or acrylate were polymerized by radical initiation. Thermal properties and mesomorphic behaviors of the compounds and the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and small angle X-ray diffraction technique (SXRD). In the results of DSC and POM, all of compounds showed an enantiotropic transition with broad temperature range and the polymers also were observed birefringent texture. X-ray analysis showed that the compounds existed as a dimer form with hydrogen bondings among imidazole moieties and had a smectic structure. The mesogenic compounds having polymerizable group were polymerized by irradiation with UV light (100W short arc mercury lamp) in the liquid crystalline state for the fixation of their molecular structure. |
