Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based hydrogels have superabsorbent properties and are biocompatible, but their use is limited because of their low mechanical strength. We used a dual crosslinking strategy to form a new CMC-based hydrogel (Cm-Pam) with high mechanical strength and superabsorbent properties through an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) with polyacrylamide. Cm-Pam hydrogels showed higher superabsorbency than reported CMC-based IPN hydrogels, including CMC based gels, and showed higher mechanical strength than CMC gels. The compressive strength of Cm-Pam hydrogels was 37-55 times higher than CMC gels. Thus, the present study can promote the use of CMC-based hydrogels in various fields by providing a new method of synthesis of CMC-based hydrogels with improved mechanical strength and high water absorption. |
