Various organic modifiers containing carboxylic acid or vinyl groups with different alkyl chain length were synthesized and used to modify sodium montmorillonite (MMT) by ion exchange reaction. In x–ray diffraction (XRD) studies, d–spacing of organically modified MMT (OMMT) was increased after modification, as the alkyl chain length was increased. Isobutylene–isoprene rubber (IIR)/OMMT nanocomposites were prepared by melt–compounding followed by hot press vulcanization in the presence of sulfur and additives. We also used the mixture of two different OMMTs, such as, ADODA–MMT and ACCA–MMT with the ratios of 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1. When the mixture system was used, IIR nanocomposites provided further improvement in mechanical properties. (80 kgf/cm2 of tensile strength and 77 kgf/cm2 of Young’s modulus). Both exfoliated and intercalated structures were observed and the increases of d–spacings of OMMT were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). |
