We have synthesized organic modifiers for the modification of hectorite by the reaction of benzyl chloride, allyl bromide, and alklyamines (ethyl, dodecyl, octadecyl, allyl, triallyl, and triethanol) using tetrahydrofuran as a solvent. Hectorite was modified in aqueous media by ion exchange reaction with variation of adding amount of modifiers. After modification of hectorite, we could observe the increase of the interlayer distance of organically modified hectorite (OHTR) by X-ray diffraction. Isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR)/OHTR nanocomposites were prepared by melt-compounding followed by hot-press vulcanization in the presence of sulfur and additives. The mechanical properties of IIR/OHTR nanocomposites were investigated by tensile measurements and IIR could be improved the mechanical properties by the nanocomposition with OHTR. The relation between mechanical properties, d-spacing, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of IIR/OHTR nanocomposites will be further discussed. |
