Hyaluronic acid-conjugated phycocyanin nanoparticles for tumor targeted photodynamic therapy |

Phycocyanin, a naturally derived biomaterial, has excellent photodynamic activity, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. To increase tumor specificity, we conjugated hyaluronic acid to phycocyanin nanoparticles (PC NPs) for tumor targeted photodynamic therapy. The hyaluronic acid-conjugated PC NPs (HA-PC NPs) had an average size of 289.19 ± 3.22 nm and a spherical shape with a rough surface. In FT-IR analysis, it was confirmed that the conjugation between hyaluronic acid and phycocyanin were successfully performed. Especially, the HA-PC NPs generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) by 635 nm laser irradiation. Furthermore, the HA-PC NPs showed ROS generation-mediated cytotoxicity under 635 nm laser irradiation. On the other hand, the cells pre-treated with HA showed low cytotoxicity under the laser irradiation after the treatment of the HA-PC NPs. Thus, we believe that HA-PC NPs could become an attractive photodynamic therapeutic agent for tumor targeted photodynamic therapy. |
