The self-healing polymer is recently attracting attention of researchers due to the improved durability. Self-healing chemistries based on the dynamic features of disulfide linkages have been studied to impart creack recovery in polyurethanes. The cystine is oxidized dimer form of the amino acid, cysteine, with disulfide linkage undergoing metathesis. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is environmentally friendly materials using water instead of the organic solvent such as dimethyl formamide. Therefore, the WPUs have been used for wide range of industrial application in coatings and adhesives. In this paper, we have investigated WPU prepared from a prepolymer of poly(tetramethylene ether glycol), dimethylol propionic acid and isophorone diisocyanate with cystine as a chain extender in water. The sizes of the latex particles, mechanical properties, thermal properties have been characterized and self-healing properties attributable to the disulfide linkages were investigated experimentally. |
