Critical needs for alternative energy have coerced the South Korean government to actively invest in biomass-based energy development. One such example is to launch and financially support Advanced Biomass R&D Center (ABC) for a period of 9 years starting from 2010. A number of experts in various research fields including phycology, molecular biology, biochemical engineering, and chemical engineering are taking part in this research center. Efficient technologies for mass cultivation, cell harvesting, lipid extraction, and lipid conversion to biodiesel and bio-jet fuel as well as new microalgal strains are being developed. Various processes are also under development for the production of valuable chemicals from lipid-extracted microalgal biomass and by-product glycerol. |
