제목 Synthesis of Visible Light Responsive Azobenzene Liquid Crystal Polymer Networks
초록 Azobenzene has been used as a molecular machine to convert input light energy into conformational change through photoisomerization, which generates strain in the polymers by distorting the local polymer network. However, azobenzene requires the high-energy UV light to trigger photoisomerization which limits their use in biomedical application. To overcome these problems, we synthesize a new class of azobenzene functionalized liquid crystal polymer (LCP) networks that can be actuated by visible light that is safer and provide higher penetration. The new azobenzene contains tetramethoxy groups in the ortho position, which allows a separation of n-π* absorption bands, resulting in the green-blue light switchability. The tetra-ortho-methoxy azobeznene monomer is mixed with reactive mesogen, and forms LC networks by photopolymerization. We envision that our visible light responsive LC networks have a great potential in numerous applications including soft-robotics and dynamic substrates.
