Although lithium metal has been considered as the best lithium battery anode for a while, lithium metal has never been successfully used due to its unstable surface phenomenon. In this investigation, we prepare polydopamine coated polyethylene (PE) separators for excellent cycle life of Li metal electrodes and high power Li ion batteries as well. The unique adhesive character of polydopamine remarkably suppressed the dendrite formation while its liquid friendly nature facilitates rapid movement of lithium ions. Based on the use of this mussel inspired polymer, the best cycling performance to date for lithium metal anode was achieved. The coating process does not sacrifice original advantages of PE separators including mechanical, thermal shutdown, and ionic conductivity properties. This study provides a lesson on how what we learn from nature can be applied to energy storage technology. |
