The dispersion of hydrophilic silicates in a hydrophobic matrix like Polyethylene (PE) is difficult because of the difference in character between PE and MMT. Therefore, it is necessary to modify PE with polar groups, which can increase the hydrophilicity of PE. In the present study, PE-g-MA/MMT nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing process, and the effect of maleic-anhydride content (grafted onto PE) and clay concentration were investigated and compared. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) was used to prove the dispersion of MMTs and to calculate the maleic-anhydride content. Furthermore, the dispersion of MMTs onto PE-g-MA was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thermal stability of nanocomposites was assessed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the crystallinity was determined by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The physical properties were measured by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). |
