The cultivated microalgae culture, because of its dilute nature, must go through a step of increasing biomass concentration, termed harvesting. It is energy-intensive, needing innovations in literally all aspects. Membrane filtration (MF) among many a harvesting means, stands out because of its distinctive advantages, such as efficiency, reliability, easiness of scaling-up, recyclability of culture medium, and no requirement of additional chemicals. My group has adopted various ways of improving the harvesting efficiency of the MF, mainly via the mitigation of membrane fouling which is the major cause of efficiency drop. To this end, my research group has adopted various approaches, from rendering anti-fouling functionality, creating hydrodynamic change on membrane surface, and producing microbubble via electro-membrane. All these efforts, which are all innovative, are believed to raise the usability of the MF-based harvesting to a substantial degree sooner or later. |
