Effective Fabrication and Experimental Analysis of Improved IPMC (ionic polymer-metal composite) Actuator with Ionic liquids |

Recently, IPMC soaked with ionic liquids (ILs) has been considered as stable air-operating actuator, but surely has limited performance such as slow bending rate and low electrochemical deformation than that with water. In this study, we first produced advanced IPMCs that exhibit remarkably higher capability than traditional IPMCs by using effective metal-plating and ILs-imbibing processes with synthesized ETFE-g-PSSA in the wide range from 0.2 to 3.0 meq/g. These were characterized by AC impedance, Cyclic voltammetry, FE-SEM, FT-Raman, SAXS, and laser displacement system. On the average, experimental results indicated that it can be maximumly deformed more than double for longer than 300 times at the same applied conditions. We demonstrate that the difference in the bending performance can be caused by the difference in the various electrical properties of ionic polymers, ILs and metal electrodes. |
