Naphthopyrans are used in plastic ophthalmic lens, optical devices and optical switches during recent years in view of their good color change ,reversible change properties and high fatigue resistance. The 3,3-Diphenyl-3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran was obtained by condensation reaction of 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol with 2-naphthol and p-toluene sulfonic acid. We synthesized 3,3-diphenyl-8-hydroxymethyl-[3H]-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran methacrylate (MADNP), as a monomer, using a methacryloyl chloride and a 3,3-diphenyl-8-hydroxymethyl-[3H]-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran, which has an hydroxy group as a substitution group. We prepared homopolymers and copolymers, which bear naphthopyran, by radical polymerization of MADNP and methyl methacrylate with different ratios. We confirmed structure of the polymers and monomers by 1H-NMR, FT-IR and etc. and investigated their photochromic properties. Naphthopyran polymers (PMD) showed colorless or pale yellow, as a closed form, to deep yellow, as a opened form, upon UV irradiation. In this work we investigated chemical, physical and optical properties of photochromic polymer containing naphthopyran as a side-chain. |
