The 2-substituted imidazolines are of great interest because of their biological activities. They are also used as matting additives, intermediates and catalysts in synthetic chemistry. Several methods for the synthesis of 2-imidazolines have been previously reported, starting from carboxylic acids, esters, nitriles, hydroxy amides, and hydroxymoylchlorides. However, these methods have disadvantages such as high reaction temperature, long reaction time, and the use of expensive starting materials or harmful reagents. To circumvent such problems, we applied microwave heating technology to the synthesis of 2-imidazolines from esters and ethylenediamine under solvent-free condition. The reaction scope and the comparison between microwave irradiation and thermal reaction will be presented. |
