제목 Comprehensive two-dimensional LC analysis of branched polystyrene
초록 To characterize multiple, mutually dependent distributions in synthetic polymers, multi-dimensional separation is an ideal method if practiced properly. In most two-dimensional analyses of synthetic polymers, one dimension is usually the molecular weight distribution and the other is one of the various molecular characteristics such as the composition in copolymers or the tacticity of stereoregular polymers[1,2].
Branching is an important molecular characteristic greatly influencing the physical property and processing of polymeric materials. To our knowledge, there has been no report on the branching analysis by multi-dimensional separation since there is no adequate LC method to separate polymers exclusively with respect to the number of branches. In this work, we demonstrate the use of comprehensive 2-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) to analyze a model branched polymer system featuring a bivariate distribution in the molecular weight and in the branching type.
we combined RP-TGIC (separating the branched PS mainly by MW) and LCCC (separating the branched PS mainly by the number of branches) to investigate the MWD and branch type distribution of the branched PS. Since the LCCC separation can be repeated more rapidly, RP-TGIC was employed for the 1st-D separation at a mobile phase flow rate of 0.02 mL/min and 2nd-D LCCC separation was carried out at a mobile phase flow rate of 1.2 mL/min. As shown in Fig. 1, the branched PS was well separated in terms of both molecular weight distribution(MWD) and branch type distribution(BTD).
