In this work, the adsorption and surface characteristics of organically modified montmorillonite (MMT) and ozonized MMT have been studied. The pore structures are studied by the BET method with N2 adsorption isotherm. Also, the surface characteristics are investigated in near-IR (NIR) and contact angles. As experimental results, the BET’s surface areas of organically modified MMT and ozonized MMT are decreased, probably due to the surface screening and pore blocking effects, resulting from the presence of dodecylammonium ions on MMT layers. In NIR’s results, the new peaks at 5790 and 4880 cm-1 are due to the CH2 and NH groups in the organically modified MMT, respectively. Also, the ozone treatments of the MMT lead to an increase of SiO or SiO2 groups on MMT surfaces. In angle’s results, the electron acceptor (γS+) for the specific component of MMT is increased, whereas electron donor (γS-) is decreased in the presence of ozone treatment, resulting in increasing the oxygen-containing functional groups on MMT. |
