Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been of great interest over the past decade because of their unique properties and potential applications such as biochemical sensors. For such applications, chemical modification of CNTs with specific functionalities is required. In particular, the functionalization of CNTs with fluorophores represents an emerging strategy in the development of nanoscale photoactive sensor. In this study, water-soluble CNT attached with fluorescent pH-sensitive polymer is synthesized for application of biosensor. CNT acts as a quencher and poly(sulfadimethoxine) (PSDM) is chosen as a pH sensitive polymer. PSDM is synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of SDM monomer using pyrene initiator, which results in a pH sensitive backbone with fluorophore at the one end. By generating amine group in the other end of the polymer, it is conjugated with the carboxyl group of CNT. The optical change of CNT-polymer-fluorophore complex is measured as a function of pH. |
