Photodynamic therapy (PDT) induces cell death through the cytotoxic reactive oxygen species such as singlet oxygen by using photosensitizer (PS). However, a main drawback in the current PDT is the limited penetration depth due to the light absorption and scattering by biological tissues, resulting in ineffective therapeutic effect. Recently, the use of upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) has opened a new area for overcoming this problem by converting low energy light into high energy light. In this study, UCNPs were synthesized under various conditions by hydrothermal method. Then, biocompatible block copolymer with targeting ligand were introduced into the surface of UCNPs and PSs were also conjugated for PDT action. Their morphology, chemical composition and optical properties were analyzed. In addition, in vitro cell viability and cellular uptake were determined using MCF7 and A549 cells. |
