The percolation behavior of carbon nano-tubes(CNTs) in polymer composites is investigated using Monte Carlo simulations and percolation theory. The percolation behavior of CNTs is crucial to electric conductivity and mechanical properties of CNT/polymer composites. It has been well known that the shear flow influences the percolation behavior of CNTs significantly. As the CNTs are aligned along the flow direction due to the shear flow, the percolation threshold of CNT/polymer composites changes significantly. In this work, we perform simulation studies using a simple shear flow model between impenetrable walls. At a low shear rate, the formation of a percolating network of CNTs is enhanced resulting in a lower percolation threshold concentration. Meanwhile, at a high shear rate, it is observed that the formation of percolating network is rather hampered by the shear flow. |
