Azo-containing polymer materials are widely used in the fields of optical switching, liquid crystal displays, optical data storage media for digital data, and so on. A series of novel hard-soft-hard liquid crystal triblock copolymers (TBCs) containing azobenzene moiety in the side-chain with different content ratios of the azo block, was successfully synthesized via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in anisole with macro-chain transfer agent and new crystalline acrylamide monomer in the presence of AIBN. Kinetic studies on the triblock copolymer system verified the controlled/living manner of RAFT. The chemical structures and properties of the newly designed TBCs were determined by 1H NMR, DSC, UV, and GPC, respectively. Moreover, the liquid crystalline properties and morphological structure were observed by optical polarizing microscopy and AFM. |
