Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) membranes with different degrees of sulfonation (40% ~ 80%) were prepared by both homogeneous and heterogeneous methods. Sulfonation and its degree were identified using FTIR spectroscopy and back titration method, respectively. Thermal analysis showed that the increase of sulfonation degree increased the glass transition temperature and enhanced the thermal stability. The room temperature ion conductivity of the homogeneously prepared sPEEK membrane with 68% sulfonation degree was higher than that of Nafion® 117, while its methanol permeability was lower than that. The tensile strength of the sPEEK membrane was comparable to that of Nafion 117 at equilibrium water swollen state. A variety of properties of sPEEK membranes prepared by two methods were compared, and in overall the ion conductivity of homogeneous system was higher than that of heterogeneous one, while their methanol permeability was not in big difference. |
