Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a mechanically and chemically high performance material used in various industrial applications, such as microfluidics, turbine, vehicles, aerospace craft, and medical implant materials. PEEK, however, is inherently hydrophobic, and therefore, hydrophilic surface modification is a critical requirement in the majority of PEEK applications. Although the use of plasma treatment or chemical etching method offers a relatively convenient route for the surface modification, the effect of hydrophilic treatments quickly disappear and its original surface property is recovered within a few hours when stored at ambient conditions. In this work, we develop an efficient method of hydrophilic surface treatments of PEEK and characterize the hydrophobic recovery phenomena of the modified PEEK surface. |
