From an ion exchangeable diamine comonomer of 4,4’-diaminodiphenyl ether-2,2’-disulfonic acid (SODA) and a photo-crosslinkable chalcone diamine comonomer of 3,3’-diaminochalcone (3DAC), and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA), a series of the novel photosensitive polyimide electrolyte membrane were prepared for direct methanol fuel cell applications. The chemical structure of this new type of photosensitive polyimide was confirmed by NMR and IR. The photo-crosslinking of the sulfonated polyimide membranes was carried out by exposing the membranes to UV light in the presence of or without distilled water. We also investigated TGA, DSC, UV properties of sulfonated membranes from polyimides. The experimental results such as the ion-exchange capacity, water absorption and ionic conductivity suggested the membrane could be a potential candidate for direct methanol fuel cell applications. |
