LbL microtubes consisting of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were prepared using porous membrane as a template. We investigated the effect of assembly pH and molecular weight of PAH and PAA on the as-made morphologies and changes in shape of LbL microtubes incubated at high temperatures in aqueous solution. Microtubes assembled at pH 5.5 (PAH) / 5.5 (PAA) exhibited perforations while those assembled at pH 7.5 (PAH) / 3.5 (PAA) showed a smooth surface. The microtubes assembled at pH 7.5/3.5 transformed more effectively compared to those assembled at pH 5.5/5.5. In addition, microtubes transformed more effectively as the molecular weights of PAH and PAA decreased. However, microtubes lacked dimensional stability when assembled with low molecular weight PAH (15,000 g/mol) and PAA (50,000 g/mol) at pH 7.5/3.5. |
