Molecular release through polymeric thin layers in a controlled or predesigned manner has been a hot topic because the control can provide immediate applications in pharmaceutical drugs, cosmetics, smart capsules, and paintings, etc. Based on the physical or chemical characteristics of polymer layers, there are three primary mechanisms by which molecules can be released from thin polymeric barriers: diffusion, degradation, and swelling followed by diffusion. In all three systems, diffusion is always involved. For model studies of controlled release, the polymer layer is of a constant thickness, chemically uniform, and sunmicron scale. In this presentation, we suggest a simple way to carry out a systematic study on molecular release through polymeric thin layers. And a programmable release control of multiple active agents through structural design will be demonstrated. |
